Frequently asked questions
How does the knitting pattern generator work?
You upload a photo of a sweater, cardigan or vest. The AI identifies the construction (top-down, bottom-up, raglan, set-in sleeves), the neckline, the sleeve style and the main stitch, then calculates a complete row-by-row pattern from your gauge and measurements.
Is La Maille free?
Yes. Photo analysis and pattern generation are free and do not require an account. A free account lets you save your patterns.
How is it different from a chart or grid generator?
Most online tools turn an image into a color grid for colorwork. La Maille produces an actual garment pattern: cast on, increases, decreases, neckline, sleeves and bind off, sized to your measurements.
Which garments are supported?
Pullovers, cardigans, vests and sleeveless tops in stockinette, ribbing or garter stitch. Complex cables, lace and colorwork are not generated yet.
Do I need to know my gauge?
Yes. The pattern is calculated from your stitches and rows per 10 cm (4 inches) with your yarn and needles. Always knit a swatch before starting.
